====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 30, 2007 Vermont--Legislative Wrap-Up Dear HSLDA members and friends, The Vermont Legislature recently ended its 2007 session. Of the 12 bills that Home School Legal Defense Association monitored, only one will become law. Two of the 12 bills directly affected homeschooling--House Bill 9 required the state to give parents a certain amount of money for each homeschooled child, and House Bill 17 would have allowed homeschoolers to borrow public school textbooks. Neither of these passed either branch of the legislature. Other bills that HSLDA watched include the following: House Bill 256 and Senate Bill 139--requiring girls going into the 6th grade to receive the HPV vaccination House Bill 275 and Senate Bill 80--permitting same sex marriage House Bill 534--creating a state-funded prekindergarten system for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds House Bills 256 and 275 and Senate Bills 139 and 80 died in committees. House Bill 534 has passed both the House and the Senate. It has not yet been sent to Governor Jim Douglas, but he is expected to sign it when he receives it. Thank you for your support of home education and parental rights in Vermont. If you have any questions regarding this legislative session, please feel free to contact HSLDA. Sincerely, Michael P.
