Dear Texas HSLDA Members and Friends:
Good news! HB 1250 has passed the Senate and is on its way to the
governor for a signature! The bill passed the House and the Senate
Education Committee without incident. However, during the vote on the
Senate Floor, Senator Ellis forced an amendment to strike section one
from the bill. HB 1250 then passed.
The first section in HB 1250 related to TEXAS grants. This section
would have allowed graduates from all private schools (and not just
from accredited private schools) to meet the academic eligibility for
TEXAS grants. Because this section is no longer part of the bill, the
requirements for the TEXAS grants (including graduating from an
accredited high school) remain the same.
However, the second section, relating to B-on-time loans, did remain
part of HB 1250 and passed the Senate. With the new language graduates
from all private schools, including unaccredited private schools in
the home, meet the academic criteria for the B-on-time loans.
The bill is expected to be signed by the governor. Thank you for your
