====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 26, 2007 Oregon--Apple Pie Day Dear HSLDA members and friends, This May 10 offers an exciting opportunity for all homeschool families within driving distance of the Capitol. "Apple Pie Day," now in its 14th year, allows homeschool students and parents to have a civics field trip to the Oregon State Capitol. Homeschool families from all over bring apple pies, tour the Capitol, and meet with their elected representatives. Apple Pie Day is vitally important for homeschoolers across the state as it provides an opportunity for Oregon legislators to meet home-educated students and their parents. Whenever a homeschool issue comes before the legislature many representatives will remember the personal contact they have had with bright and well-behaved homeschool families. A full slate of family activities is planned for May 10. Capitol tours will operate from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. At 9 a.m. OCEANetwork will present Homeschool Freedoms 101, an informative session on how the legislative process works and a detailed report on the status of the Home Education Freedom Bill--House Bill 2629. At 10 a.m. homeschool students are invited to rehearse for a statewide homeschool choir that will sing later. At 10:30 a.m. the opening prayer for the Senate and House of Representatives will take place. Several homeschool students will perform at this time. The main event will start at noon with the Homeschool Rally on the Capitol steps. During this time the Logos Academy Home School Band will perform along with the choir. Many homeschool-friendly legislators will be there as well as a number of homeschool heroes. This event should not be missed! After the Rally a schedule of hearings will be given for families to attend if they desire, and interested homeschool students will have the opportunity to present a musical performance in the Rotunda until 5 p.m. To see more information on all of the activities planned for Apple Pie Day please go to: http://www.oceanetwork.org/alerts/Home_Education_Week.cfm . You will find all of the contact information you need for you and your family to participate in all of the events or sign up to bring an apple pie. Please plan now to attend Apple Pie Day on May 10 with your whole family and an apple pie or two to give to a legislator. Thank you for your support and work towards making Oregon an even better state to homeschool our children in. Sincerely, Thomas J.
