====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia: Guidance Concerning Frederick County 'Child Find' Letter Dear HSLDA members and friends: The Director of Special Services for Frederick County Public Schools recently sent a letter to homeschool families presenting both opportunities and challenges. The letter invites homeschool families to contact the school system if they would like the school system to provide special education services to their children. While we consistently encourage families to meet any special education services need privately where possible, families unable to do so will welcome the offer. Although private special services are the best option overall, it is better to obtain services through the public school than to forgo needed services altogether. The letter invites interested families to attend a meeting on April 18 at 3 p.m. to discuss the distribution of funds available for special education services. If you attend the meeting, your opinions will be considered as the school system decides how to allocate limited resources. HSLDA has counseled families in other states to attend such meetings if they want to have the opportunity to influence how the available money is spent. There is little or no reason to be concerned about the system's request that those who attend the meeting sign a statement saying that timely and meaningful consultation has occurred. Their request is prompted by their desire to comply with federal law that governs how they spend special education services money. If you are interested in attending this meeting but would like guidance because of particular circumstances, please contact our office. If you do NOT want special education services through the school system, we advise you to disregard all the requests for information in the letter. You are under no obligation to respond. If you do not want the services, protection of your privacy should be the priority. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
