====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 9, 2007 New Hampshire: More Action Needed to Defend Traditional Family Dear HSLDA members and friends, Thank you all for your support of traditional marriage in New Hampshire. Your calls and emails are making a difference. Unfortunately, the legislature is still attempting to pass House Bill 437, which would permit same gender couples to enter civil unions and have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as married couples. This bill is going before the Senate Judiciary Committee this Tuesday, April 10th, at 1:25 p.m. in the Representatives' Hall in the State House. The House of Representatives just passed this bill last week, and the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing in record time to get this bill passed. We are urging you to contact the Judiciary Committee members, and, if possible, to attend tomorrow's hearing to help stop House Bill 437. Remember that unless New Hampshire citizens actively and publicly protest this type of legislation, marriage as we know it in New Hampshire will be destroyed. It is vital that we support traditional marriage because a parent's right to homeschool is based on western civilization's concept of the family as a union between a man and a woman. ACTION REQUESTED 1) Please join other pro-family representatives at the hearing on Tuesday, April 10th, at 1:25 p.m. in the Representatives' Hall in the State House to oppose House Bill 437. 2) Contact as many members of the Senate Judiciary Committee (listed below) as possible, and, in your own words, given them the following message: "New Hampshire law defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman. This should not be changed. Please oppose House Bill 437, which, by giving same-gender couples the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as married couples, erodes the strength of the traditional family and threatens parental rights." You do not have to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Though this issue affects homeschoolers, it also affects every family in New Hampshire. Senate Judiciary Committee Members Sen. Joseph A. Foster, Chair Phone: (603) 891-0307 Email: joseph.foster@leg.state.nh.us Sen. David M. Gottesman, Vice Chair Phone: (603) 889-4442 Email: david.gottesman@leg.state.nh.us Sen. Deborah R. Letourneau Phone: N/A Email: robert.letourneau@leg.state.nh.us BACKGROUND House Bill 437 will ultimately: 1. Violate the very moral and ethical foundations of our culture. 2. Restrict the rights of our citizens to make moral distinctions and to speak freely. 3. Promote dysfunctional family structures that will rob the next generation. 4. Ignore the overwhelming vote of New Hampshire citizens to preserve traditional marriage. 5. Provide special rights for a few and ignore the civil rights of the majority of New Hampshire citizens. 6. Discriminate against parental moral values and convictions. 7. Promote behaviors that clearly violate common sense and social stability. 8. Create a huge economical strain on New Hampshire. 9. Elevate the already taxed judicial system in dealing with lawsuits over these issues. 10. Infringe on the constitutional protection of the free exercise of religion. Thank you for standing for traditional marriage and parental rights! Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
