====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Texas: Legislation Update Dear HSLDA members and friends: At this point, homeschool freedom in Texas remains intact. Home School Legal Defense Association Legislative Counsel Tom Sanders has been lobbying in Austin since the beginning of the session to make your views known to the legislators. We will give you a quick summary of the legislation which concerns you. COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE BILL: Senator Judith Zaffirini's bill, Senate Bill 52, which would expand the jurisdiction of the state over your children, remains in committee. Thank you for your calls in opposition to this bill; we expect it to die in committee. HOMESCHOOL ACCESS TO EXAMS: Representative Charlie Howard's bill, House Bill 1844, will open the doors for homeschoolers to participate in Advanced Placement testing and the PSAT examination through the public schools. Although this bill has been heard in the House Public Education Committee, the committee members have not voted on it yet. Mr. Sanders is working with the sponsor's office to make sure the bill is amended to change the word "home-school" to "private school in the home." This will better guarantee that the term "home-school" will not be used to separately define homeschools, and that homeschools will keep their private school status. RESCINDING GOVERNOR PERRY'S EXECUTIVE ORDER: As you know, Governor Perry issued an executive order to mandate immunization against the HPV virus. A bill to rescind this order, House Bill 1844, has passed the House and is currently in the Senate Health and Human Services. We will update you as things progress. For background on this issue, go to http://www.hslda.org/elert/archive/2007/02/20070215134816.asp. Thank you for all your calls for the many issues affecting homeschoolers in Texas. Sincerely, Christopher J. Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
