====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 22, 2007 Indiana: Your Calls are Still Needed to Support Traditional Marriage in Indiana! Dear HSLDA members and friends: As many of you already know, the Indiana Legislature is considering a state constitutional amendment that would reaffirm marriage as the union of one man and one woman only. This resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 7, is currently in the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee after passing the Senate by a vote of 39 to 10. If the resolution is passed by the House, the marriage amendment will go to the voters in 2008. Many of you have already called and emailed your state representative in support of traditional marriage. Just yesterday the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee held a hearing on the resolution and heard over four hours of testimony. The Committee is expected to vote on the resolution next week. Even though the resolution is simple and straightforward, several representatives are looking to water it down or defeat it. Your continued calls and emails to your state representative are needed to urge him or her to support Senate Joint Resolution 7. It is also vitally important that as many people as possible attend the Citizen's Rally at the Indiana Statehouse at noon on Tuesday, March 27. The main purpose of this rally is to support Senate Joint Resolution 7 and traditional marriage. We understand that a number of gay marriage supporters will likely show up so your attendance is needed. ACTION REQUESTED: 1) Please contact the members listed below and give them this message in your own words: "Please vote for S.J.R. 7. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. You can call each of the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee members by calling the Indiana House hotline toll-free at (800) 382-9842. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. You can call the Indiana House hotline toll-free at (800) 382-9842. To find the name of your state representative, use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . To email your state representative you can also go to http://www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl#house . 3) Attend the traditional marriage rally at the Indiana Statehouse at noon on March 27. If hundreds or even thousands of families attend showing their support for traditional marriage and Senate Joint Resolution 7, your elected representatives will take notice. More information about this rally can be found here: http://www.advanceamerica.com/ . BACKGROUND: The proposed amendment states, "Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups." Nothing in this amendment takes away a person's rights. Instead, it reaffirms that marriage is between a man and woman only and that the benefits that come with marriage can only be given to those who marry. Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the Indiana Constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone. Thank you for standing with us for freedom. Sincerely, Thomas J.
