====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 8, 2007 Iowa: Your Voice Crucial in Preserving Parental Rights Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your action is needed immediately to stop Senate File 210. If passed, this bill could be devastating to the rights of parents to raise their children free from state harassment, and would also set the stage for all sorts of Fourth Amendment violations. This bill would cause the Iowa Empowerment Board to implement a plan with the goal of visiting families who have a newborn child. These visits would be for the purpose of (but are not limited to) assessing the child's home environment, educating the families concerning newborn children, and assisting families in accessing "appropriate" services. This proposed program is based on the assumption that parents possess insufficient knowledge, care, and wisdom to tend to the upbringing of their newborn children without government intervention. The suggestion inherent in this bill is that Iowa government employees are able to parent better than actual parents. Parents who were to disagree with state workers with regard to the best interests of their children would likely risk being threatened, intimidated, and harassed. Just as disturbing is the likelihood that this bill, if passed, will be used as a rationale for government workers to violate the Fourth Amendment. The suggestion that the child's environment needs to be "assessed" provides one more avenue for government employees to overstep their bounds with regard to entry and search of homes. Iowa Senate File 210 has passed out of committee and is now up for consideration on the Senate floor. ACTION REQUESTED: Call your senator as soon as possible with the following message: "Please oppose Senate File 210. Parents do not need or want the government to supervise them in the raising of newborn children, but instead need to be able to bring up their children free of the stress of government intervention. Additionally, this bill raises the possibility of numerous Fourth Amendment violations."
