====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 28, 2007 Maryland--Your Calls Needed to Support Traditional Parental Rights Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your voice is needed in support of Maryland Senate Bill 564. If enacted, this bill will give the voters of Maryland the opportunity to approve the addition of a definition of marriage to their constitution. This would define marriage as between one man and one woman, and any other definition of marriage through any policy, law, or judicial interpretation would be void and unenforceable. Further, Maryland would not recognize any other type of marriage from another state. Amending the Maryland constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, might one day redefine marriage for everyone. Your right to homeschool rests on the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. At this time Senate Bill 564 is in the Committee on Judicial Proceedings, and will have its first hearing on Thursday, March 1. The text of this bill can be viewed at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3814 ACTION REQUESTED: Please contact members of the Judicial Proceedings Committee with this message: "Please support Senate Bill 564, the Defense of Marriage Amendment, which would preserve traditional marriage by defining it as between one man and one woman at one time." Since this issue effects all Maryland families, there is no need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Here is the contact information for the members of the Judicial Proceedings Committee: Sen. Brian E. Frosh, Chair (410) 841-3124 Sen. Lisa A. Gladden, Vice-Chair (410) 841-3697 Sen. James Brochin (410) 841-3648 Sen. Jennie M. Forehand (410) 841-3134 Sen. Larry E. Haines (410) 841-3683 Sen. Nancy Jacobs (410) 841-3158 Sen. Alex X. Mooney (410) 841-3575 Sen. C. Anthony Muse (410) 841-3092 Sen. Jamin B. (Jamie) Raskin (410) 841-3634 Sen. Bryan W. Simonaire (410) 841-3658 Sen. Norman R. Stone, Jr. (410) 841-3587 BACKGROUND: How does defining marriage as being between one man and one woman potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of Troxel v. Granville: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Thus, parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." When those concepts are no longer the legal definition of the family in this nation, then the foundation upon which parental rights are based is completely removed. Therefore, HSLDA will continue to fight against same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage attacks the traditions of the family in western civilization. This is an attack on parental rights. This is a battle the homeschooling movement cannot afford to lose. Very truly yours, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
