====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 26, 2007 North Dakota--Calls Needed to Stop Curriculum Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Senate Bill 2309 is legislation which would prohibit any North Dakota student from graduating from high school or being admitted to college without completing a college preparatory curriculum. This bad bill has already passed the Senate and is now in the House of Representatives. Your calls are needed to stop this unreasonable legislation before it goes any farther! How will this bill affect homeschoolers if it becomes law? Clearly, all students in a home education program receiving a diploma from their local school district, the North Dakota Division of Independent Study, or a state-approved nonpublic school would have to meet the new curriculum requirement. Additionally, homeschool graduates receiving a diploma from their parents and planning to attend college in North Dakota would have to complete the college preparatory curriculum. The unreasonable aspect of this proposed law is that even students who don't have the aptitude to complete a college preparatory curriculum or any plans to attend college would be required to meet the new graduation requirement. This is absurd. This new law could also affect admission to trade schools and employment opportunities if the schools or employers required high school diplomas. If only those students who had completed the college preparatory curriculum were considered to be high school graduates, then other students would be left out in the cold. (And it gets cold in North Dakota!) Let your opposition to this legislation be heard by contacting members of the House Education Committee. This bill already has a great deal of momentum, having passed the full Senate. Please contact members of the committee TODAY! ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Please call and write as many members of the House Education Committee as possible and urge them to vote against Senate Bill 2309 with this message: "Please vote against Senate Bill 2309, which would require all high school graduates to complete a college preparatory curriculum. This legislation fails to take into account a student's aptitude for academic achievement or plans not to attend college. Further, if a student is not able to complete the graduation requirements, this may jeopardize employment opportunities and admission to trade schools requiring a high school diploma." It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since this issue is broader than just homeschooling. The contact information for members of the House Education Committee is as follows: Rep. RaeAnn G. Kelsch, (R) - Chairman (701) 663-0774 Email: rkelsch@nd.gov Rep.
