====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA members and friends, Your calls are urgently needed to stop H.B. 1266--the bill that would overfund the South Dakota Virtual High School. This bill would give extra funding for a type of system that has failed elsewhere. The bill passed committee in the senate. Since it has already passed the house, our last major opportunity to stop this unwise bill is on the floor of the senate--and a vote is expected today or tomorrow. ACTION REQUESTED Please contact your senator with this message: "Please vote no on H.B. 1266. This bill would overfund the South Dakota Virtual High School. Virtual schools have been proven to be failures in Idaho. Don't experiment with our kids." It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since this issue is broader than just homeschooling. Use our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to get contact information for your own senator. BACKGROUND Go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3783 for a detailed explanation of how HB 1266 will channel money to SDVHS. Idaho has a virtual public school program similar to SDVHS. For both 2005 and 2006, fewer students in the Idaho virtual schools scored "proficient" or higher on the Idaho Standards Achievement Test than their fellow public school students--at every grade level! The attempt to borrow the homeschool "model"--but put the government at the center rather than parents--appears to have failed in Idaho. The legislature should not finance an experiment where children are the guinea pigs. It should slow down and examine virtual school failures in other states. Thank you for standing with us for liberty. Sincerely Yours, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
