Virginia--Victory and Action Alert

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Good news! Once again, thank you for your calls!

The Religious Freedom Act (RFA) continues to move forward. Yesterday
morning, it passed the Senate Committee on Courts of Justice. This is
the furthest the RFA has gone in the Legislature in four years.

The senators that voted for the RFA were Senators Kenneth Stolle,
Frederick Quayle, Thomas Norment Jr., Wm. Roscoe Reynolds, Nick
Rerras, Harry Blevins, Ken Cuccinelli, Mark Obenshain, and Ryan
McDougle. If any of them are your senator, make certain you thank them
for their support. It was a bi-partisan vote!

Those in committee who voted against the RFA were Senators Richard
Saslaw, Henry Marsh, Janet Howell, L. Louise Lucas, John Edwards, and
Toddy Puller.

Del. Scott Lingamfelter, the sponsor of the RFA, did a masterful job
of explaining the significance of this bill to protect religious
freedom and deflecting the attempt of the ACLU witness to sabotage the
bill. State Solicitor General William Thro did an excellent job of
showing the need of the RFA. Home School Legal Defense Association
Senior Counsel Chris Klicka also provided testimony, giving the
Committee the history of the RFA as he has been working on passing
RFAs in other states since 1997. He also gave examples of how it would
work to protect religious freedom.

The Religious Freedom Act will provide protection for people of faith
in every area when their religious convictions conflict with the
state's regulations. We are using it to protect homeschoolers in
Pennsylvania and Florida.

We hope that with your help, the Religious Freedom Act will pass the
Senate and Virginia will be on its way to protecting religious
freedom--just like the other 13 states that have already passed the
Religious Freedom Act.

In order to achieve this, we need you to call your state senator
now---the RFA will be voted on by the entire Senate this week.

We urge you to contact your state senator and ask him or her to
support the Religious Freedom Act. You can reach your senator via the
capitol switchboard at (804) 698-7410 or (804) 698-1470. Or you can
use our legislative toolbox at to find
your senator's contact information.

You can give them this message:

"Please vote in favor of House Bill 3082, the Religious Freedom Act.
This bill will protect one of the most important freedoms in the state
of Virginia--religious freedom."

You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler---just as a
citizen who wants religious freedom protection.

To view the history behind RFAs, how they work and why they are
needed, view our previous e-lert: "Calls needed for Monday Morning
Religious Freedom Act" at .

Thanks for taking a few minutes and making a difference. We are on
the verge of winning needed protection for religious freedom in

-> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks?

We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little
enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle
is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time,
families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they
can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities
-- their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all
once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
