====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 20, 2007 Montana--Committee Victory and Action Alert Dear HSLDA members and friends: Montana homeschoolers received a resounding victory in the Senate Education Committee on Monday when the bill requiring public school registration of homeschool students was tabled. The vote to table Senate Bill 458 was 8-1, with the only opposing vote cast by the bill's sponsor, Senator Don Ryan. Hundreds of homeschoolers packed the Capitol to demonstrate their opposition to this threatening legislation. Congratulations to all of you on such an effective lobbying effort! Unfortunately, Senator Ryan is not giving up. He stated at the hearing that he is going to try to by-pass the ruling of the Committee by asking the full Senate to "blast" the bill from the committee. This means that the Senate may vote to override the committee's decision to table the bill. It will require more than a simple majority of senators to accomplish this, 30 out of 50 senators voting to override the committee's decision. Please contact your state senator TODAY to stop this legislative maneuvering! REQUESTED ACTION: 1. Please contact your state senator with this message: "Please vote against Senator Ryan's motion to blast Senate Bill 458 from the Education Committee. Besides Senator Ryan, the bill had no supporters at the committee hearing. This bill would effectively destroy homeschooling in Montana by turning homeschool students into public school students with all of the attendant state control. It would also unfairly entitle local school districts to receive state funds for homeschool students in the same amounts as for regular public school students, even though the school districts provided no services to the homeschool students" To find the name of your state senator, use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=2055.
