====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New Mexico: Calls Needed to Support Marriage Dear New Mexico HSLDA members and friends: State Rep. Gloria Vaughn has introduced House Joint Resolution 2, which proposes amending the New Mexico Constitution to state that a marriage will "consist only of a union of one man and one woman." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may also undermine parental rights, and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the New Mexico Constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with citizens could one day redefine marriage for everyone. The proposed amendment says that the Constitution of New Mexico shall add a new section to read, "Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman. Any right or claim to a marriage between persons of the same sex shall not be valid, binding or enforceable in New Mexico even if the marriage or any right or claim is valid, binding or enforceable in another jurisdiction." Once this amendment is passed by the Legislature, it does not go to the governor, but is submitted to the people for approval or rejection in the next election. ACTION REQUESTED: We ask that you contact your state senator and representative and give them this message: "Please vote for House Joint Resolution 2, which gives citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. How to find your senator/representative: Go to http://legis.state.nm.us/lcs/legislatorsearch.asp, and type in your ZIP code, or call the New Mexico Legislature's main switchboard at (505) 986-4300 and ask for your senator or representative. Thank you for standing with us for freedom. We will notify you soon as to any upcoming vote in committee. Sincerely, Christopher J.
