Michigan: Calls Needed to Oppose Expansion of State Control Over Education
Dear HSLDA members and friends in Michigan,
This is the second part in our strategy to let the Michigan Legislature know that the citizens are opposed to expanding the compulsory attendance ages. Last week and earlier this week we sent out e-lerts to urge you to contact the sponsors of this legislation as well as the governor. Now the focus is on your state senators and representatives.
Three bills have been introduced in the Michigan Legislature which would expand the age of compulsory attendance for children in the state. Senate Bill 162 will lower the compulsory attendance age from 6 to 5. It will also make kindergarten mandatory. Senate Bill 11 and House Bill 4042 would raise the age of compulsory attendance from where it is currently at age 16 to age 18. If these bills passed, students in Michigan would be subject to government control for an additional three years!
These bills have gained momentum in the Michigan Legislature and we need you to call both your senator and representative to let them know of your opposition to this expansion of state control of education.
We are working closely with Dennis Smith of INCH and the Home School Legislative Action Committee and legislators to initiate this massive phone and email blitz to Michigan representatives and senators.
REQUESTED ACTION:
Please call or email your own state senator and representative now through Thursday, February 22 and give them this message:
"Please oppose S.B. 162, S.B. 11, and H.B. 4042. By expanding the age of compulsory attendance, these bills take from the parents the ability to choose what is best for their child. Government involvement at a young age is an ineffective substitute to parental care. On the other end, parents are not able to choose work or an educational option for their teenager. Finally, this bill will waste taxpayer dollars by forcing more children into school even though their may be a better alternative open to them."
You do not need to identify that you homeschool--just that you are a concerned parent and taxpayer.
You can find information on your representative by using our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox/.
