Montana--Calls Needed to Oppose
Expansion of State Control Over Education

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

House Bill 651 poses another threat to your homeschool freedom by
raising the compulsory school attendance age. This legislation would
raise the compulsory attendance age from 16 or completion of the 8th
grade to age 17 or graduation from high school. This means that
parents would be required to comply with the homeschool law for at
least an additional year. Legislators need to know that you oppose
this expansion of state control over your homeschool!

This bill is scheduled to be considered by the House Education
Committee on Monday, February 19, at 3 p.m. in Room 137 of the Capitol
in Helena. Please contact members of the committee TODAY and express
your opposition to House Bill 651.

1. Please contact the members of the House Education Committee listed
below and your own state representative with this message:

"Please vote against House Bill 651, which would raise the compulsory
school attendance age in Montana. Requiring older students to attend
school when they won't want to do so will have a disruptive effect on
education and increase disciplinary problems in school. Also,
additional teachers will have to be hired and school facilities built
to accommodate the additional students, all at taxpayer expense."

Please do not identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since this
issue is broader than just homeschooling.
