====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 13, 2007 Iowa: Call to Stop the Expansion of State Control of Your Children Dear Iowa members and friends, Your calls and emails are needed to voice opposition to House Study Bill 115. If enacted, this bill will create and fund a statewide pre-school program for 4-year-old children (and possibly younger, as space allows). This bill is scheduled for a committee hearing on February 13 at 8 a.m. It is vital that you lend your opposition to this bill, not only because it supplants parental care with ineffective and inefficient government involvement, but also because voluntary preschool programs are the first step towards a mandatory lowering of the compulsory attendance age. REQUESTED ACTION Please call and email the members of the Iowa House Education Subcommittee assigned to this bill, and deliver the following message: "Please oppose H.S.B. 115. Government involvement at such a young age is an ineffective substitute to parental care. Additionally, this program will likely result in efforts to lower the compulsory attendance age, further eroding parental rights. Finally, this bill will waste taxpayer dollars, since there is nothing to indicate that early schooling results in any educational advantage for the child." You do not need to identify that you homeschool. To contact the following members of the House Education Subcommittee at the Iowa State Capitol, dial the House Switchboard at (515) 281-3221 and ask to leave a message for one of the following education subcommittee members. (You do not need to share this reason with your legislators.) > Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks? We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities -- their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
