Dear HSLDA members and friends: Thank you! Your calls helped convince the House of Delegates to pass tax relief and scholarships for homeschool and private school families by a margin of 56 to 43! Now we must convince the Senate to take action. With your help, our tax laws can become more fair. ACTION Please contact your senator and ask him or her to support H.B. 1843, the Public/Private Education Investment Tax Credit. Call your senator at 1-800-889-0229, the constituent hotline, or use our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find your senator's individual contact information. You can give them this message: "We are parents of school-age children who need tax relief. Please support House Bill 1843, the Public/Private Education Investment Tax Credit act. It will provide scholarships for tuition, book fees, and educational fees. We thank you for supporting this measure." BACKGROUND Homeschool and private school families pay taxes to support the public school system, but do not use it. They use their own funds to cover the cost of an education. This bill is a small way of acknowledging that we save the state millions of dollars each year. The bill creates the opportunity for tax credits and scholarships for private school and homeschool families. It also provides tax credits to encourage investment in public school building construction and extra-curricular activities. The sponsor of the bill is Delegate Chris Saxman.
