====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 6, 2007 Oklahoma: Please Call on Bill That Requires Homeschool Notification! Dear HSLDA members and friends: As many of you have already heard, Senator Jim Wilson introduced a bill yesterday which would radically change the current freedom you enjoy in Oklahoma. Please call Senator Wilson and urge him to remove his bill from consideration before the Oklahoma legislature. Senate Bill 375 would require homeschool parents to notify their local school district of their intent to utilize "other means of education" (i.e. homeschooling) before the first day of each school year or within 10 days of beginning their program. Senate Bill 375 would also require parents to report to the local school district their child's academic progress at the end of each semester throughout the school year! Last but not least, S.B. 375 would subject homeschool students to the jurisdiction of the local attendance officer. Under Oklahoma law, an attendance officer can take temporary custody of any child who is found away from his or her home or school during normal school hours without a lawful excuse as authorized by the school district. We need your calls and emails to Senator Wilson to persuade him to remove Senate Bill 375. Giving Senator Wilson your own personal message about this bill (whether by phone, email, or both) will be the most effective way to get his attention. The bill has just been assigned to the Senate Education Committee so please contact all of the members of that committee listed below. REQUESTED ACTION: 1. Please call and email Senator Wilson and give them this message in your own words: "Please remove Senate Bill 375 from the legislature immediately. Under the Oklahoma Constitution a parent may provide for "other means of education" to their children. Study after study has shown that children taught at home generally do above average academically. This bill is an unacceptable infringement of parents' rights to direct their child's education." When calling Senator Wilson's office, understand that they will probably be receiving a lot of calls. Please be courteous but firm in your opposition to Senate Bill 375. Please let his office know if you are one of his constituents (District 3).
