====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== NCHE--Attend the Congressional Action Program (CAP) Lobby Training Day Dear homeschool family, Due to the recent political shift in Congress, it is likely that there will be increasing numbers of attacks on our parental freedoms. Therefore, we are looking for homeschool families to volunteer to visit congressional offices to help protect these precious freedoms. To this end, we are reinstituting the Congressional Action Program (CAP) to create a citizen lobby force to make a difference on Capitol Hill when there is important legislation pending that could affect your freedom. Many of you may remember that CAP was active throughout the 1990s. Moms, dads, and teens, working under the direction of HSLDA staff, played an important role in helping convince congressmen to vote in favor of homeschool freedoms. They helped defeat H.R. 6 in 1994, when Congress attempted to require all teachers, including homeschool parents, to be licensed teachers. CAP lobbyists also helped defeat President Clinton's national test and Goals 2000. In addition, CAP also supported legislation which favored homeschool freedom. It is important to resume this program in order to effectively protect parental rights and homeschool freedom during the upcoming 110th Congress. We believe that homeschooling families can make a persuasive case in support of homeschooling to elected senators and representatives. When homeschooling parents and their children take time from their busy schedule to visit a congressional office in Washington, D.C., they provide a lasting impression of the success of home education. CAP provides families with a chance to help influence the laws that will affect them. It gives children a chance to see elected officials up close. This is also an opportunity to help preserve our hard-fought homeschooling liberty by sharing your passion for homeschooling. HSLDA is currently offering training and resources to families who would like to learn how to be effective lobbyists on Capitol Hill. We invite you to register as a CAP family and take part in our first CAP Lobbyist Training Day on Friday, March 9, 2007 at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia. You will also be given the opportunity to become an official HSLDA CAP Lobbyist, equipped and ready to take on Capitol Hill when called upon. Please use this link (http://nche.hslda.org/cap/) to register for the CAP Lobbyist Training Day and for additional information. Space is limited so we recommend that you register quickly. HSLDA encourages families to bring mature children to the CAP Lobbyist Training Day, as well as to congressional offices in Washington, D.C. Your children will be a good example of the quality of home education to elected officials and staff in our nation's capitol. We look forward to seeing you on March 9. Please call our office at 540-338-5600 and ask for Cristina Meier, or email us at cap@hslda.org if you have any questions. For liberty, J. Michael Smith President William A.
