====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 30, 2007 Indiana--Calls Needed in Support of Traditional Marriage Amendment Dear HSLDA members and friends: As many of you may know, a traditional marriage amendment has been introduced in Indiana. Senate Joint Resolution 7 would amend the Indiana Constitution to state that marriage is between one man and one woman. Senate Joint Resolution 7 is currently in the Senate Judiciary Committee. If the resolution is passed by the Senate, the marriage amendment will go to the voters in 2008. The proposed amendment states, "Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups." Please call and email your state senator today and urge him or her to support Senator Joint Resolution 7. ACTION REQUESTED: Please call your state senator and give him or her this message: "Please vote for S.J.R. 7. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. You can call the Indiana Senate hotline toll-free at (800) 382-9467. To find the name of your state senator, use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . To email your state senator you can also go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3692 . BACKGROUND: Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the Indiana Constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone. Thank you for standing with us for freedom. We will be notifying you next year as to the exact timing when the assembly will be voting for this marriage amendment. Sincerely, Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's National Center for Home Education is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
