====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 19, 2007 North Dakota--Announcing Citizens Night! The North Dakota Home School Association (NDHSA) invites all home-educating families to Citizens Night at the Capitol in Bismarck on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Citizens Night will be an opportunity for citizens from across the state to meet with their legislators and express their views about legislation of importance to them. We at HSLDA believe it is very important for as many homeschool families as possible to attend this event. State legislators need to know your thoughts related to bills under development. For example, sharing your thoughts about Senate Bill 2184 which would extend the number of school days and compulsory attendance to age 18 could be influential in shaping education laws in North Dakota. In my 16 years at HSLDA I have seen how effective capitol lobby days are in preventing bad legislation. A face-to-face meeting between a legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling. Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. If a legislator never meets a homeschooler, he may have no reason to support parental freedom to homeschool and may vote against homeschooling if presented with the issue. In addition to protecting your freedom, the Citizens Night provides a great opportunity to your children for a field trip to learn about state government and how laws are made in North Dakota. Dress in business dress, instruct children in good behavior and introduce yourselves to your legislative team. The evening's schedule is as follows: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. - Tours 7:00 - 7:45 p.m. - Committee Hearings 7:45 - 8:30 p.m. - Floor Sessions Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event! Below are MORE reasons to attend the North Dakota Citizen's Night: > Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement. > Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of homeschoolers within the state. > Spend one-on-one time with your legislator. > Show legislators that the homeschool movement is alive and well and interested in the legislative process. > Provide your legislator with literature about homeschooling. Whether you can attend this event or not, please communicate with your legislators and other legislators involved in issues of concern to home educators this legislative session. Your voice and participation is very, very important. Without your timely action this legislative session, home educators could easily find themselves with additional burdens or constraints written into law. Likewise, with your involvement, some important improvements could be seen in the home school law! Sincerely, Dewitt T.
