====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Rhode Island--Homeschoolers Persuade School Committee Restrictive Policy Needs Changing Last night I attended the West Warwick school committee meeting and asked them to create a task force to revise their antiquated and burdensome home school policy. The homeschoolers present, including Steve and Amy Brock of Rhode Island Guild of Home Teachers, by a show of hands unanimously favored the creation of a task force. Every school committee member who spoke supported the task force. The school committee's attorney, too, spoke in favor of creating a task force. The final vote was unanimously in favor. The stage is now set to significantly improve West Warwick's home school policy. While the "time on task" issue was the catalyst for the creation of the task force, the entire policy will be subject to revision. In the near future, the school committee will name a number of home schoolers to be on the task force. If you would like to volunteer, have a little time you could spare, and are dedicated to protecting freedom, I would like to talk to you. Please email me at ScottW@hslda.org or call me at 540-338-5600. I also asked the school committee to defer action on the Kane's homeschool program until the task force could finish its important work. The Kanes, out of principle, have refused to submit "time on task" information. Regrettably, the school committee denied this request. The Kanes are facing a possible rejection of their homeschool program. We hope that cool heads will prevail and no legal action will be taken against the family. However, Home School Legal Defense Association stands fully ready to defend them as may be necessary. Sincerely Yours, Scott A.
