====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 25, 2006 Tennessee--Marriage Amendment on November 7 Ballot Dear HSLDA members and friends: The general election ballot on November 7, 2006, will include a very important proposed amendment to the Tennessee Constitution. Voters will be asked to approve a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Any other definition of marriage through any policy, law, or judicial interpretation would be void and unenforceable. Further, Tennessee would not recognize any other type of marriage from another state. How does defining marriage as being between one man and one woman potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of Troxel v. Granville: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Thus, parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." When those concepts are no longer the legal definition of the family in this nation, then the foundation upon which parental rights are based is completely removed. Therefore, HSLDA will continue to fight against same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage attacks the traditions of the family in western civilization. This is an attack on parental rights. This is a battle the homeschooling movement cannot afford to lose. Please vote in favor of the amendment to define marriage in Tennessee as between one man and one woman. It's important to every traditional family. Black, III Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
