====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== LEGISLATIVE NEWSFLASH September 25, 2006 Bill: SB 840 - Socialized Medicine (State Senator Sheila Kuehl) - Vetoed by the Governor on 9/22/06 - a Very Encouraging Victory! HSLDA is passing on this NEWSFLASH from Roy Hanson and Jim Davis of Family Protection Ministries (FPM). We thank God for intervening and stopping SB 840. Your response to our Alert on this bill with your calls, letters and prayers made a big difference. * SB 840 was an aggressive plan to bring socialized medicine into California by replacing private health insurance with a mandatory state-controlled health insurance and service delivery system for every California resident. * SB 840 would have forced every California resident above poverty level to pay a state insurance premium (hidden tax), and would have driven up the cost of health care coverage. * SB 840 would have destroyed the current system of choices of health care coverage and reduced the availability of health care, forcing some families to go out of state to obtain health care. * SB 840 would have created a new huge government bureaucracy with the power to make life and death medical decisions, and would have placed all final health care decisions in the hands of a single government board and its commissioner. * SB 840 would have set the stage for funding highly objectionable services such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. * SB 840 would have also provided the necessary source of funding for future legislation to be passed that would require that everyone, including children, undergo regular mandatory psychiatric exams. The last attempt to require regular mandatory psychiatric exams for all Californians failed in 1999 (SB 276) in big part due to a lack of adequate funding. No further action is required on SB 840. Permission given to reprint and distribute this Newsflash unaltered to your friends, church, school, and group. ***** ***** ***** ***** Roy Hanson's Home Educators Legislative Phone Tree Private & Home Educators of California P.O.
