Iowa--Protecting Privacy During the 'Learning Curve'

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

This is a reminder that a Competent Private Instruction (CPI) form for
each homeschooled child is due to be filed by the first day of public
school in your district.

Many officials, however, are probably unaware of the new privacy law
the Iowa legislature recently enacted. To help protect your privacy
during this period of unfamiliarity, HSLDA has developed a form that
is available on the members-only section of our website that tells
officials what they must do. It is entitled, "Privacy Caution to Area
Education Agency and Resident Public School District." We recommend
that you file this along with your CPI form.

If your student is dual-enrolled in the public school, however, we
recommend you use a different form: "Notification to Area Education
Agency and Resident Public School District that Directory Information
Should Not Be Released." This is also available on the members-only
section of our website. It contains boxes you can check if you want
directory information about your student released to college or
military recruiters.

You are not required to use either of these forms, but they will help
secure the privacy rights the legislature has established after years
of work by homeschoolers.

Sincerely,
Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.

-> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount"

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could
get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off
our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double
what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's
license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
