====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== August 2, 2006 Washington--Follow up on Virtual Charter Schools Dear HSLDA members and friends: Last week in our e-lert about public virtual schools, one of the schools mentioned, the Digital Learning Commons, was incorrectly grouped with a list of virtual public charter schools. While the Digital Learning Commons has online courses, it is not a publicly funded virtual charter school--it is a privately owned company. What our previous e-lert should have stated was that several public schools have used courses from the Digital Learning Commons to supplement their virtual public programs. A homeschool family can privately register with the Digital Learning Commons (DLC) and purchase an online course or courses without being enrolled in a publicly funded virtual charter school. This means your child can enroll with DLC and remain free of the government controls commonly associated with government virtual charter schools. BACKGROUND The Digital Learning Commons is a nonprofit organization working to improve access to educational opportunities and learning resources by providing high-quality educational materials, online courses, and technology tools to all students, teachers, and parents in Washington State. The DLC is not a school. Rather, students and parents can make use of a range of online resources to personalize and individualize their homeschool learning experience, including educator-reviewed and safe reference materials, supplemental curriculum to enhance instruction, and over 300 courses in a variety of subjects, including foreign language and advanced-level courses. You can learn more about the DLC homeschool membership by visiting online at http://www.learningcommons.org/homeschool/ or emailing homesch@learningcommons.org. If you are not yet a member of HSLDA and would like to help us fight for greater parental rights and homeschool freedom in Washington please visit http://www.hslda.org/join/apply.asp . Sincerely, Thomas Schmidt Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount" "When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
