====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== July 27, 2006 HSLDA: Hear Ye, Hear Ye--You are Cordially Invited to a Convention Dear HSLDA members and friends: Few phrases in American history are as significant as "We the People." This phrase is not only the foundation of our beloved Constitution, it is the philosophical thread that is woven through the tapestry of our republic. Home School Legal Defense Association remains committed to protecting and preserving the form of government our Founding Fathers so carefully established. Toward that end, HSLDA, through its Generation Joshua Program, is excited to be hosting a Constitution Day event on September 18, 2006 on the campus of Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Va. This day coincides with the official United States Constitution Day signed into law by President Bush in 2004, and will be a celebration of the Constitution. Open to ages 11-19 (there is a list of recommended activities for parents to enjoy that day in the Purcellville area on the Generation Joshua registration page), this program will provide students with a deeper understanding of the Constitution, the men who framed it, and the way it was debated. Students will hear background lectures presented by Generation Joshua Director, Ned Ryun. The lectures will not only deal with why the Convention was called and why the Constitution was needed, but the highlights of the Convention as well, including the Virginia Plan, the New Jersey Plan, the Great Compromise, the Slave Debates, and the Final Debate and Ratification. After each background lecture, the students will participate in a reenactment of those key debates by using a modified first-person version of James Madison's "Notes on the Debates in the Federal Convention." Students will discover who Edmund Randolph, Roger Sherman, Luther Martin and other delegates were, and come away from the day with a better understanding of the Constitution and how it came into existence. The day will conclude with a round table discussion with invited guests on the Constitution today, as well as an introduction to the Generation Joshua program. The cost is $15 per student and includes lunch and a one-year membership to Generation Joshua.
