====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 31, 2006 Colorado--Governor Signs Compulsory Attendance Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: Senate Bill 73 was signed by Governor Owens on Friday, May 26. This bill raises the compulsory attendance age for public and private school students from 16 to 17 years. The bill does not go into effect until July 2007, so we will have one more chance to defeat this bill entirely next legislative session. We are very grateful for Senator Greg Brophy for beginning the amendment process in the Senate for homeschoolers to be exempted, and to Governor Bill Owens who made sure homeschoolers were exempted from this bill in the House. Thank you to all of you who persistently contacted your representatives to oppose this bill, and to those of you who participated in protest at the hearing on this bill. Also, a special thanks to Treon Goossen, with Concerned Parents of Colorado, who spent hours tirelessly working on the behalf of homeschoolers in Colorado to put a stop to this bill. Most importantly we praise God for without whom our victory would be completely impossible. Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> For as little as 27 cents a day...
