====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 18, 2006 North Carolina--Calls Needed for Defense of Marriage Amendment Dear HSLDA members and friends: Senate Bill 1228 introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly on May 10, 2006, is legislation which proposes a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage. It would define marriage as "The union of one woman and one man at one time. The uniting of two persons of the same sex or the uniting of more than two persons of any sex in a marriage, civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar relationship would not be recognized in North Carolina." Members of the North Carolina Senate and House of Representatives need to know that homeschooling families support this legislation. Your calls, emails, and letters to your state senator and representative will greatly encourage them to pass this important legislation. Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the North Carolina constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone. At this time Senate Bill 1228 is in the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate. Please join in this fight to preserve the traditional definition of marriage and family in North Carolina by contacting members of the committee and your own state senator and representative today! Action Requested: (1) Please call or write (both would be better) members of the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate and your own state senator and representative with this message: "Please support Senate Bill 1228, the Defense of Marriage Amendment, which would preserve traditional marriage by defining it as between one man and one woman at one time." Since this issue effects more than just the homeschooling community, there is no need to identify yourself as a homeschooler.
