South Carolina: Calls Needed To Stop Immunization Bill

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Senate Bill 1046, legislation which would establish a state
immunization registry for South Carolina children, was approved by the
House Health and Environmental Affairs Subcommittee last Wednesday.
The House Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee
will take up this bill tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2:30 p.m. in Room 426 of
the Blatt Building. Unless the committee members hear from families
opposing this bill, it will continue to sail through the General
Assembly and likely become law. It has already passed the Senate.

Senate Bill 1046 would create a state immunization registry at the
Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to track
vaccinations received by children. It would also empower DHEC to
create reporting requirements for citizens, schools, and healthcare
providers to provide information to the registry. Such record keeping
of personal medical information by the state is an unnecessary and
threatening invasion of privacy.

Private medical providers already do an excellent job of maintaining
records on patients receiving immunizations. We don't want the state
to begin harassing citizens about what shots to get and when. There is
a real likelihood that parents who choose not to have their children
vaccinated as prescribed by DHEC will be reported to the Department of
Social Services for medical neglect.

There is also a negative fiscal impact of this bill for residents of
South Carolina. The increase in the number of state employees required
to administer this tracking and reporting program will result in
higher operating expenses to the state and possibly higher taxes for
citizens.

ACTION REQUESTED

1. Please contact the members of the House Medical, Military, Public
and Municipal Affairs Committee with this message:

"Please vote against Senate Bill 1046 which would create a state
immunization registry for children. Such record keeping of personal
medical information by the state is an unnecessary invasion of
privacy. Private medical providers already to an excellent job of
maintaining records on patients receiving immunizations.

2. Please forward this email to other families who are not members of
HSLDA and ask them to contact members of the committee as well. This
legislation would affect all families in South Carolina, not just
homeschoolers.

-> How long are you in for?

Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to
homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum-some
graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to
be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA.
It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of
homeschooling ahead.
