====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 8, 2006 Virginia--School District Can't Dictate Test Form Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in Smyth County, We would like to offer guidance concerning issues discussed in a letter the school district recently sent to area homeschool families. If you wish to use a standardized test for your year-end assessment, you are not required to tell the school district which standardized test you intend to use. You can use any nationally-normed standardized test. Assessments other than standardized tests can be used as long as they show an adequate level of educational growth and progress. Your year-end assessment must be filed by August 1. Your notice of intent for the coming year must be filed by August 15. You should make every effort to meet these deadlines. If you miss either deadline, please contact us for guidance. Families do not need to "apply" to homeschool. When someone "applies" for something, it implies they must wait for a reply before they proceed. Homeschool families do not "apply"-- they simply file a notice. Once they file their notice, they do not need to wait for approval before homeschooling. The notice of intent form included with the district's letter calls for information you are not required under law to submit. Their form is also outdated and does not reflect the changes in the homeschool law that become effective July 1. We encourage you to use the notice of intent form available on the members-only section of our website at http://members.hslda.org/state/VA/default.asp . Please call our office at (540) 338-5600 if you have any questions, or if you are interested in submitting an assessment other than a standardized test. Sincerely, Scott A.
