====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 8, 2006 South Carolina: Calls Needed To Stop Immunization Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: Senate Bill 1046, legislation which would establish a state immunization registry for South Carolina children, is scheduled to be heard by the House Health and Environmental Affairs Subcommittee on Wednesday, May 10, at 9 a.m. in Room 426 of the Blatt Building. This bill passed the Senate on April 26. Unless the subcommittee hears from families opposing this bill, it will continue to sail through the General Assembly and likely become law. Senate Bill 1046 would create a state immunization registry at the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to track vaccinations received by children. It would also empower DHEC to create reporting requirements for citizens, schools, and healthcare providers to provide information to the registry. Such record keeping of personal medical information by the state is an unnecessary and threatening invasion of privacy. Private medical providers already do an excellent job of maintaining records on patients receiving immunizations. We don't want the state to begin harassing citizens about what shots to get and when. There is a real likelihood that parents who choose not to have their children vaccinated as prescribed by DHEC will be reported to the Department of Social Services for medical neglect. There is also a negative fiscal impact of this bill for residents of South Carolina. The increase in the number of state employees required to administer this tracking and reporting program will result in higher operating expenses to the state and possibly higher taxes for citizens. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Please contact all three members of the House Health and Environmental Affairs Subcommittee with this message: "Please vote against Senate Bill 1046 which would create a state immunization registry for children. Such record keeping of personal medical information by the state is an unnecessary invasion of privacy. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools.
