====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 5, 2006 Rhode Island--Word of Caution on Interviews Dear HSLDA members: The Superintendent of public schools for Middletown, Rhode Island, recently sent a letter asking homeschool parents to "make an appointment for an informal interview" concerning each family's planned home instruction program. HSLDA discourages the use of face-to-face interviews. In some school systems, officials have used interviews to intimidate and belittle parents, browbeat them, and try to persuade them to enroll their children in the public schools. Because of the normal conversational processes, officials tend to get far more information in an interview--often information to which they would not be entitled under law--than they would get if the family simply mailed information to the school office. Whatever information a school system legitimately needs can be supplied through the mail. This protects the family from the undesirable aspects of an interview.
