====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 3, 2006 Colorado--Religious Freedom Amendment Defeated Dear HSLDA members and friends: Thank you for your calls and support for HCR 1007, the Religious Freedom Amendment. This Amendment is needed in Colorado in order to protect religious freedom. We believe religious freedom is one of the bulwarks supporting your right to homeschool. However, the legislature thought differently. On a party line vote, the Committee members, Representatives Weissman, Ragsdale, Carroll, Coleman, Gallegos, and Todd, all voted against the Religious Freedom Act. Representatives Cadman, Crane, Liston, Schultheis, and Cloer all voted in favor of religious freedom. Representative Mark Cloer (a homeschool dad), sponsor of HCR 1007, did a tremendous job, and we urge you to send him a thank you to the following address: Colorado State Capitol 200 East Colfax, Room 271 Denver, CO 80203 HSLDA Attorney Scott Somerville flew in to give testimony. He provided the Committee with a thorough understanding of the Religious Freedom Amendment and how it has been working in 13 other states where it has already been adopted. Nevertheless, the vote had already been decided before he even started. The Representatives committed to vote down the resolution regardless of the overwhelming support for religious freedom in Colorado. We thank all of you who showed up at the hearing. The homeschoolers' support was tremendous, and the children's behavior was impressive. This battle for religious freedom in Colorado is not over. In fact, it has only just begun. With some hard work and preparation for next year, we believe that we will ultimately have the victory. Thank you all again for your efforts to support religious freedom in Colorado.
