====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 28, 2006 Volunteers Needed June 5-9 Dear HSLDA members and friends, This year's NCFCA National Speech and Debate Championship--the largest competitive event for homeschool students--will be held in HSLDA's backyard. Patrick Henry College is hosting the 2006 National Championship and on June 5, a record number of homeschool students and their parents from across the nation will arrive in Purcellville, Virginia, to compete in 12 different categories of speech and debate. As you might imagine, there is a lot to do to get ready for them--and a lot to do during the week they are here. Would you be willing to help? Volunteers are needed in the following three areas: 1. PHC Volunteers: The college is looking for volunteers ages 15 and older to assist in a variety of areas to help the tournament run smoothly--from setting up and tearing down, to parking management, dining hall detail, and messengers--just to name a few. If you are interested in volunteering, please click on http://www.phc.edu/ncfca and follow the volunteer links. 2. Judges: With 1,500 judging slots to fill, NCFCA needs judges! Because NCFCA's goal is to train students to speak to any audience, adults with no previous judging experience are more than welcome. To help new judges feel comfortable, HSLDA is hosting a judge's orientation on Wednesday, May 31 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. The same orientation will be available before every round of competition during the tournament if that is more convenient for you. The greatest need for judges is on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7. You'll find the judges' application page at: http://clshipe.googlepages.com 3. Host homes: Not all of the families traveling in for the tournament will be able to afford to stay in local hotels. If you live within a 30-mile radius of Purcellville, Virginia, and would be willing to open your home from Monday, June 5, through Friday night, June 9, please go to http://clshipe.googlepages.com/ncfcahostsign-up to register. (Hosts are not responsible for providing transportation or meals.) We also invite you to come and observe the tournament. If you have children who are interested in speech or debate, this is the perfect opportunity for them--and for you--to see what's involved. For tournament schedule information, go to www.ncfca.org, click on the section that says "National Championship to be held at Patrick Henry College," then click on "Preliminary Tournament Schedule." The National Homeschool Debate League was founded by HSLDA in 1997. NCFCA has managed the league since 2000. HSLDA is encouraged by the continued growth of speech and debate and the tremendous opportunity it offers homeschoolers to become skilled in winningly and persuasively presenting their viewpoint. Won't you join us? Sincerely, Mike Smith HSLDA President ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who's knocking on your door?
