National Center for Home Education--Legislative Briefing Report The National Center for Home Education's 2006 Legislative Summit reached one of its high points on Thursday morning, March 30. Four Senators and eight Representatives spoke to our group of 75 homeschool leaders. Washington Times Op-ed: Compulsory Attendance Deserves F The argument for placing increasingly younger children into school is that it will improve academic attainment. A North Carolina member family called us when a social worker threatened to take their children. Our attorneys intervened and showed the family how to prove their innocence. The Social Worker at Your Door: 10 Helpful Hints If your family is targeted by a social services investigation, protect your children by invoking your Fourth Amendment rights. Alabama: School District Oversteps Authority Homeschoolers in Houston County turned to us when local public school officials began demanding monthly enrollment and attendance reports. Our attorney showed officials their request went beyond what state law requires. North Dakota: School District Refuses To Provide Monitor A member family contacted us after local public school officials refused to provide a teaching "monitor" as required by state law. Our attorneys contacted the officials and pointed out that if the school district refused to furnish a monitor this would waive the requirement that the home education program be monitored at all. Pennsylvania: School District Drops Unlawful Proposal After receiving a letter from Senior Counsel Dewitt Black of Home School Legal Defense Association, the board of school directors of the Bethlehem Area School District decided to abandon a plan to discriminate against homeschooling students participating in extracurricular activities at the public school. Illinois: Special Education Services Reinstated for Homeschoolers A member family contacted us after being told their child no longer qualified for federally mandated special needs services. Public education officials in Illinois were claiming that state law did not require them to help special-needs homeschoolers. HSLDA attorneys contacted state officials and showed them they were wrong. Georgia: School District Insists on Use of its Forms In January, a school social worker from Gainesville City Schools went to the home of a Home School Legal Defense Association member family and advised the mother that she was required to utilize the declaration of intent and attendance forms provided by the school district.
