Iowa--Calls Needed to Support Parent-Directed Driver Ed

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

This morning Iowa Rep. Kraig Paulsen and Rep. Jodi Tymeson are going
to attempt to add parent-taught driver education to a bill already
moving through the legislature. Your calls in support are crucial!

Parent-taught driver's education saves lives. Although driver
education is theoretically available through school districts, many
homeschool students are turned away because the classes are full, and
even if they are admitted, the cost can be prohibitively expensive.

Homeschooling for driver education works. We need your help now to get
this message to the House of Representatives.

Call your representative immediately and ask him or her to support the
Parent-Taught Driver Education amendment when it comes up for a vote.
Your message may be simple as:

"Please support the parent-taught driver education amendment. It would
allow homeschool parents to teach driver's education to their own
children using an approved program. A study shows that parent-taught
driver education saves lives. Homeschoolers are frequently turned away
from public school driver education because the classes are full.
Homeschool families need the option of teaching their own children
using an approved program."

To find the name and telephone number of your representative, go to

Reasons to Support the Parent-taught Driver Education Amendment

1. According to a study by the University of Colorado-Colorado
Springs, teenage injuries and deaths were dramatically lower for teens
who learned to drive using a homeschool driver education program. The
total number of accidents and tickets was also dramatically lower.

2. Homeschooled students are frequently turned away from public school
driver education classes because the classes are full.

3. Public school driver education courses are expensive, and getting
more expensive.

4. No professional driver teacher cares as much about your child as
you do. Parent-taught driver education is highly successful for the
same reason that parent taught academics are highly successful: highly
individualized attention, flexible scheduling, parent child
interaction, and greater opportunity for accountability.

The Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators and HSLDA fully support
this amendment. Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
