====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 27, 2006 Ohio--Privacy threatened in Cincinnati! Dear HSLDA members and friends: HSLDA has known for a long time that neither federal law nor Ohio statutes provide adequate protection to homeschool paperwork submitted to the school district. The law arguably treats homeschool paperwork as "public data," which is subject to a Freedom of Information Act request by third parties. The Cincinnati Public School District has received just such a request, asking for information on all of the homeschool students in the district. Cincinnati appears to be taking steps to avoid violating homeschool privacy. Because we have been aware of this problem for years, our notification form--available for members--already addresses this problem. If you used HSLDA's form, you have already taken steps to protect your privacy. However, our experience with school officials leads us to believe they may not read the fine print on your notification form at this point, so we are advising all members to use the form available on our members only web page to assert their privacy interest. You can access that form here: http://members.hslda.org/state/OH/Ohioprivacy327.pdf . Sincerely, Scott W. Somerville Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
