====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 23, 2006 Iowa--Calls Needed to Support Marriage Protection Amendment Dear HSLDA members and friends: House Joint Resolution 1 would propose an amendment to the Constitution of the State of Iowa to define marriage as between one man and one woman and prohibit any other unions. The bill has passed the House and is now stuck in the Senate State Government Committee. It must be out of the committee by tomorrow, Friday, March 24, 2006 or it will die. Please join in this fight to preserve the traditional definition of marriage and family in Iowa. Contact members of the Senate State Government Committee today! ACTION REQUESTED: (1) Please call and email as many members of the Senate State Government Committee as possible with this message: "Please support House Joint Resolution 1 which would protect and preserve traditional marriage between one man and one woman." BACKGROUND We must act now to permanently protect marriage in Iowa. Since 2004, 15 states have adopted constitutional amendments preserving traditional marriage through ballot initiatives, averaging a winning percentage of over 70 percent. That brings the total to 19 states that have added marriage amendments to their state constitutions. Another 11 states are currently pursuing similar measures. The marriage amendment states: "Only marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized in the State of Iowa. The State of Iowa and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. Amending the Iowa Constitution will protect the concept of marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with the citizens will one day redefine marriage for us. Thank you in advance for your commitment to the protection of marriage in Iowa. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks? We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities -their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
