====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 22, 2006 Colorado--We Need You to Come to Home School Day at the Capitol! Christian Home Educators of Colorado (CHEC) invites all home-educating families to its Home School Day at the Capitol on April 7, 2006 at the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. We at the Home School Legal Defense Association believe it is very important for as many homeschool families to attend as possible. The current Colorado Legislature is NOT pro-family. At any time, they could introduce legislation to restrict homeschooling. In fact, Senate Bill 73, which is being pushed through the legislature, would increase government control over homeschooling 3 more years. However, in my 20 years at HSLDA, I have seen how effective capitol lobby days are in preventing bad legislation. If a legislator from either party meets a good homeschool family face-to-face, it makes it hard for them to vote to restrict homeschooling. If they never meet a homeschooler, they will often vote against homeschooling when given the opportunity. In addition to protecting your freedom, the Home School Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for a field trip for your children to learn about our government and how laws are made. Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event! On the agenda: > Noon time Rally. > Visit your Representative and Senator (ask them vote against SB 73 that increases controls on homeschoolers 3 more years, and to support the Religious Freedom Amendment). > Participate in FREE workshops. > Participate in various educational tours of museums and the Capitol. > Sign your students up for our Future Statesman program, which includes a workbook and free workshops for kids ages 6-18 scheduled in the morning and afternoon during Day at the Capitol. This way you will fulfill the Colorado Legal Requirement for regular courses of instruction in the Constitution of the United States. > Attend the Homeschooling for Liberty in the 21st Century banquet, where U.S. Congressman Bob Schaeffer and others will be honoring Colorado State Representative Kevin Lundberg as 2006 Statesman of the Year. Some of the events and tours are completely free to your family, and others come at significantly reduced rates. Go to www.chec.org and visit the Day at the Capitol web page under Events. BACKGROUND: Below are six MORE reasons to attend Legislative Day: > Dispel any negative myths about the homeschool movement. > Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of homeschoolers within the state. > Provide positive literature to legislators regarding homeschooling. > Spend one-on-one time with your legislator. > Your presence is necessary to show that the homeschool movement is alive, well, and thriving strong. > This is an election year--they need to know that homeschoolers vote! Please, help keep homeschooling free in Colorado. We make a significant statement to your representatives when 2,000 home educators participate in the noontime rally at the capitol on April 7. Call CHEC for a brochure (1-877-842-CHEC), or sign up NOW at www.chec.org . We hope you can come this year! Sincerely, Christopher J. Klicka, Esq. HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum-some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
