====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 10, 2006 Virginia--Ordinance Criminalizing Large Families is Tabled Dear HSLDA members and friends: On March 3, opponents packed a county government hearing room in Berryville to protest a proposed ordinance. The ordinance would limit the number of adults and children who can live in a house with a drainfield in Clarke County--even if they were all of the same immediate family! Many spoke against the proposal, including Home School Legal Defense Association Litigation Attorney Jim Mason. The zoning commissioners had a difficult time acknowledging Mason's point that some parents with large families would be considered criminals under the proposal. However, as a result, the commissioners agreed to create a citizen panel to review the issues and give a recommendation. Meanwhile, the oppressive proposal is essentially tabled. We expect a major revision of the proposed ordinance. An ordinance that criminalizes parents for having children is intolerable. Sincerely Yours, Scott A.
