====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 9, 2006 Utah--One More Step: Calls Needed for Parental Rights Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: House Bill 148 has already been through a large amount of drama as it has worked through the Utah legislature. By the grace of God, it has passed both chambers, and is on the governor's desk, ready to be signed. Both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News have published editorials asking the governor to veto this legislation, and the lobbying groups that oppose this bill are hard at work, contacting the governor's office for a veto. ACTION REQUESTED: Please call and write the governor's office. Ask him to support parental rights by signing H.B. 148! Jon Huntsman, Jr. Utah State Governor Utah State Capitol Complex East Office Building, Suite E220 PO Box 142220 Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-2220 801-538-1000 BACKGROUND: H.B. 148 arose out of a controversy in which a court allowed the former lesbian lover of the child's natural mother to stand in the place of the parent against the wishes of the mother. The provisions of this bill would protect the rights of parents against courts that would otherwise allow third parties to stand in the place of a parent over the wishes of a natural parent.
