====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 3, 2006 Utah--Victory on House Bill 148! Dear HSLDA members and friends: Great news from the legislature! Here is the news from state homeschool leader Frank Mylar. **** H.B. 148 passed last night, with two minutes to spare in the session! God worked incredibly. I arrived at the capitol at about 7:00 p.m. with several copies of a couple statutes in hand to counter utter lies propagated by the homosexual agenda. They had a campaign of sending emails telling Senators that they were grandparents and that H.B. 148 would take away their rights. I was able to get the statutes in hand to the Senate Sponsor Dave Thomas which he read from on the floor a few minutes later. I further was called in by Senator Waddoups and gave him copies of the statutes. He invited me to come on to the Senate floor, which is not generally allowed, so that I was able to provide information directly to the Senators and to the House Sponsor, LaVar Christensen to counter the lies. The opposition argued lie after lie. A homosexual Senator offered an amendment which I could see as not only making the bill worthless, but would have set up a constitutional attack on our marriage amendment. Thankfully that substitute was voted down. To please a couple of Senators, however, we added an express exclusion of the statute for grandparents. This, however, meant it had to go to the House again on their concurrence calendar. One Senator almost killed the bill by circling it because the debate was taking up too much time, but the Senate Pres. Valentine at that point stated, "I don't see anyone else rising to argument, let's just go to summation on the bill." He said this so quickly there was no time for the opposition to stall the matter with more argument. As the votes were given by a voice roll-call a couple of Senators were not present and one passed on his vote and the total was dead even at 12 to 12 and the Pres. broke the tie in our favor and then two other GOP Senators threw their votes for the bill. I just kept praying during the entire voting process. The bill then went to the House concurrence calendar for a quick vote. However, the computers crashed and with just two minutes left in the 2006 session, LaVar Christensen read the bill and got the House members to vote. As with their initial vote, ALL House GOP members voted for the bill making it pass, just in time. God was truly at work! Thank you for your prayers and support. In His Service, Frank Mylar John 15:5 ***** We would also like to add our thanks to you for your phone calls and emails. They made a difference!
