====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 24, 2006 South Dakota--Update: Compulsory Attendance Bills Defeated Dear HSLDA members and friends, Your calls made a tremendous difference. The bill that would have subjected 16 and 17-year-olds to compulsory attendance, House Bill 1235, was soundly defeated in the Senate Tuesday. The bill that would have subjected 5 and 6-year-olds to compulsory attendance was defeated in the Senate yesterday. H.B. 1235 had significant momentum. It was requested by the governor, and sailed through a House committee, the full House, and Senate committee. Finally, after an outpouring of your calls, a motion on the Senate floor to pass the bill failed by a vote of 11 to 23. H.B. 1234 was defeated in Senate committee earlier, but a sly application of a procedural rule forced the committee to report it to the Senate floor. With your calls pouring in, the Senate did the right thing and voted down this bill. Thanks in part to your hard work, the freedom of parents to decide the best way to prepare older teens for adult responsibilities, and the freedom to decide whether 5 and 6-year-olds should begin formal education, has been preserved for another year. The Alternative Instruction Association also worked very hard to defeat these bills. The contributions of the organization and its members, and particularly President Jim Trimble and legislative representative Mark DeVries, were vital. Homeschool organizations are the only organized groups in the nation protecting families from annual efforts to expand the compulsory attendance age. Your efforts are a tremendous blessing not only to the homeschool community, but to all parents. Sincerely, Scott A.
