====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 22, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Thank you for your calls. You have been successful in stopping or delaying harmful bills from clearing the legislative chambers. Last week the deadline passed for bills to be approved in the houses where they were introduced. Due to your calls two bills relating to the Department of Social and Health Services were stopped. House Bill 3148 would have prevented social workers and other state employees from being held civilly liable for acts or omissions they committed during an investigation. House Bill 3153 would have placed all reports that a social worker deemed to lack "sufficient evidence to make a determination" or "inconclusive" on a parent's file for 20 years. "Grandparent Visitation Rights" were also debated in the legislature in House Bill 2711 and Senate Bill 6683. These bills would have given grandparents the ability to question the decisions of fit parents and force parents to allow visitation. The only possibility for these bills to be resurrected is for them to be attached to legislation that is still active. HSLDA will continue to monitor these bills to ensure this doesn't happen. No further action is necessary at this time. Your calls were vital in the battle for freedom. Sincerely, Thomas Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
