====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 21, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: The marriage amendment resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 70, is unlikely to pass this year. It has been introduced two years in a row, and despite numerous calls in support, it has never made it out of committee. We have been notified by the Illinois Family Institute and Protect Marriage in Illinois that a petition drive to encourage the Assembly to pass the marriage amendment, which would place a referendum on the November 2006 ballot, has been launched. While your calls are still needed to support the marriage amendment resolution in the Senate Rules Committee, this petition may have a greater chance at getting the referendum on the ballot. ACTION REQUESTED: A report from the Protect Marriage in Illinois (PMI) states that their immediate goal is to collect 500,000 signatures of registered Illinois voters by April 20, 2006. They actually need about 280,000 valid signatures. HSLDA is standing with PMI in requesting that each person who reads this e-lert commit to fill out at least one full petition sheet (7 names). In addition, HSLDA is also standing with PMI to encourage pastors and other ministry and community leaders to step forward to hold petition drives in their churches and at local public events. Download the petition at www.protectmarriageillinois.org, or you can call PMI toll-free at 877-787-8011 and they will mail you a petition packet. BACKGROUND: The marriage amendment states: "Only marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized in Illinois. The uniting of persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Illinois." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. Amending the Illinois constitution will protect the concept of marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with the citizens will one day redefine marriage for us. Thank you in advance for your commitment to protect marriage in Illinois.
