====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 21, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Great news! House Bill 148, which would protect key parental rights, has passed the House. It is now in the Senate, where quick action is required. The session only lasts until March 1, so if the Senate does not act before then this bill will die. ACTION REQUESTED: Please call your senator and give him or her this message: "House Bill 148 would protect the rights of parents. Please vote 'Yes!' " To find your legislator, visit the HSLDA Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . BACKGROUND: H.B. 148 arose out of a controversy in which a court allowed the former lesbian lover of the child's natural mother to stand in the place of the parent against the wishes of the mother. The provisions of this bill would protect the rights of parents against courts that would otherwise allow third parties to stand in the place of a parent over the wishes of a natural parent.
