====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 21, 2006 Iowa--Calls Needed: Protect Children from Mental Health Screenings Dear HSLDA members and friends: Calls are needed to stop Iowa Senate File 2162, which would subject normal children to government mental health screenings. The likely result from these "screenings" is that many children will be labeled, stigmatized, and even prescribed behavior-controlling drugs. While the bill says these screenings or mental health interrogations would be "voluntary," few children or parents are prepared to resist the pressure and even threats that some public school officials often apply. In Palmdale, California, for example, hundreds of parents "voluntarily" agreed to have their children answer a harmless-sounding "assessment" questionnaire. They were shocked to discover that their children were asked immoral and offensive questions. This bill is just a stepping stone to further encroachment of the government into the family. It is foreseeable that if this bill passes there will be an attempt to make the "screening" mandatory, and to "screen" for many other issues. Last year, for example, Indiana adopted a bill moving the state toward screening not only for mental health, but also for social and behavioral health. ACTION REQUESTED: If your senator is listed below, please call him with this message: "Please vote against S.F. 2162. Routine mental health screenings will lead to many children needlessly being labeled, stigmatized, and prescribed drugs." Do not identify yourself as a homeschooler but rather as a "concerned parent." You may call your senator at the Iowa Senate switchboard: (515) 281-3371, or at his home number, which is listed below. Members of the S.F. 2162 Senate Human Resources Subcommittee are: Amanda Ragan (614) 424-0974 James A. Seymour (712) 64702699 Jack Hatch (515) 243-2033 Maggie Tinsman (563) 332-5522 Use our legislative toolbox to find your senator's name at: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox To view the text of the bill go to: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=2841 To view the Palmdale decision go to: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=2842 Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
