====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 10, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Due to your calls and emails one of the mandatory kindergarten bills has been defeated! On Wednesday the Education and Military Affairs Committee in the Senate voted 3 to 1 to have Senate Bill 2186 "held." This action by the committee will ensure that this bill is not sent to the entire Senate for consideration. While this is a significant victory we must not rest until all of the bills have been defeated. Please continue to contact the various committee members below and urge them to defeat the remaining bills. If you have already called all members then please email, if you have emailed please consider calling. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Please call or email the House Education Committee members listed below and give them this message: "Please ensure that House Bills 2088, 2089 and 2139 are defeated. Lowering the compulsory school attendance age from 6 to 5 and making kindergarten mandatory takes away the right of parents to decide whether their children are ready for school and would only waste taxpayers' money. " Do not identify yourself as a homeschooler, instead you can identify yourself as a concerned parent and taxpayer. House Education Committee Members Committee Chairman: Representative Roy M. Lowering the compulsory school attendance age from 6 to 5 and making kindergarten mandatory takes away the right of parents to decide whether their children are ready for school and would only waste taxpayers' money." The Chairman, Senator Sakamoto, and the Vice-Chairman, Senator Hooser, voted to defeat the bill along with Senator Nishihara. The only vote in favor of the bill was Senator Chun Oakland, who was also the main sponsor of the bill. Senators Tsutsui and Hogue were excused from the vote. All of the remaining bills are active. Currently there are three bills in the House--H.B. 2088, H.B. 2089, and H.B. 2139--and one bill in the Senate--S.B. 2888. While House Bill 2089 has been deferred by the committee this is not a complete victory. If the committee simply defers a bill our understanding is that it can be reconsidered at any time. H.B. 2089 and the remaining bills must be completely defeated before this issue is dead. For more information on these bills online see http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/HI/default.asp . For more information on compulsory attendance, please see our memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1421 .
